Publishing agreements for Open Access

Here you will find which agreements Södertörn University participates in, where the publication fee for Open Access, ie APC (article processing charges) is either completely included or is reduced.

As a researcher at Södertörn University, you can benefit from many publishing agreements that include the fee for publishing with Open Access. The university has agreements with several of the major publishers, including Elsevier, SAGE, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis and Wiley. This means that publishing with Open Access is free of charge for researchers at Södertörn University. There is an exception for a small number of journals where the fee is reduced and where the library does not cover the cost.

These are the conditions for you as a researcher to be covered by the agreements:

  • You must be affiliated to Södertörn University
  • The agreements only apply when you are a Corresponding Author
  • You must use your SH email address when submitting your article

The agreements with the publishers are national and are negotiated by Bibsam at the Royal Library. Each university decides which agreements to participate in. Some of the agreements include unlimited publication, while others are based on a predetermined number of expected published articles by the participating universities. In the latter case, the prepaid pot may run out before the end of the year.

Which journals are included in the agreements?

In the SciFree tool, you can search for a journal to see if it is included in one of the agreements where APC is prepaid or discounted. You can also see if the journal applies any specific Creative Commons-licens External link, opens in new window. and if it is a pure Open Access journal or a so-called hybrid journal (subscription based journal where some articles are Open Access).

The five-year agreement with ACM entails unlimited publishing of fact-reviewed articles in all serial publications from the Association for Computing Machinery. These are about 150 journals and newsletters, as well as 1,000 conference publications. E-books are not included in the agreement. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2026.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

You must use your SH email address when submitting your manuscript to ACM. You will then be automatically identified using the email domain. CC-BY is the first choice when publishing, but you have the opportunity to choose for yourself.

Brill and De Gruyter have merged and are now called De Gruyter Brill. It is not yet clear how this affects the agreements for each publisher.

The agreement with Brill includes unlimited Open Access publication of scientific articles in all Brill journals, including pure Open Access journals. As a researcher at Södertörn University, you also get a 20% discount on the publication cost when publishing books with Open Access.

All articles are published with a CC-BY license. The article types covered by the agreement are:

  • Research articles
  • Review articles
  • Rapid communications
  • Brief reports
  • Case reports

The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

Use your SH email address when submitting a manuscript to a Brill journal. When asked, state that you are eligible for free Open Access publishing. See the illustration below:

Based on your email address, Brill will identify you as an author who is eligible to publish with Open Access, free of charge. The article will be immediately Open Access when it is published.

This agreement includes unlimited publishing of Open Access articles in both hybrid and fully Open Access journals from Cambridge. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

When submitting a manuscript to a Cambridge University Press journal, use your SH email address and state that you are affiliated to Södertörn University. In this way, CUP will identify you as an author qualified to publish Open Access at no cost.

Once your article has been accepted for publication, the library will be asked to confirm your affiliation. After confirmation, you will receive an email from RightsLink stating that your article has been approved and that Södertörn University covers the publishing fees for Open Access. The article becomes Open Access immediately when it is published.

The article types included in the agreement are as follows:

Södertörn University is an institutional member of Cogitatio Press. This means that as a researcher at Södertörn University, you can publish articles Open Access without paying any cost.

Cogitatio Press publishes the following five journals:

  • Media and Communication
  • Ocean and Society
  • Politics and Governance
  • Social Inclusion
  • Urban Planning

Use your SH email address when submitting your manuscript to Cogitatio Press.

Brill and De Gruyter have merged and are now called De Gruyter Brill. How this affects the agreements for each publisher is still unclear.

The agreement includes unlimited Open Access publishing in both De Gruyter's hybrid journals and Open Access journals. The license is CC-BY when publishing with De Gruyter. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

When you submit a manuscript to a journal from De Gruyter, use your SH email address and state that you are affiliated to Södertörn University. This way, De Gruyter will identify you as an author who is eligible to publish Open Access at no cost.

The article types included in the agreement are primary research articles and review articles.

The agreement includes unlimited Open Access publishing in the Science Direct Freedom Collection and all Open Access journals. The Science Direct Freedom Collection contains approximately 2,000 titles, including journals from learned societies. However, the titles included may change during the contract period. The types of articles covered by the agreement are as follows:

  • Data in brief
  • Full-length article
  • Insights
  • Micro-article
  • Original software publication
  • Protocols
  • Review article
  • Short communication
  • Short review
  • Video Article

The agreement is valid until 31 December 2027.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

Once your article has been accepted as a Corresponding Author, you will receive an email from Elsevier with a unique link where you can choose your publication options.

  • Click on the link Complete the Rights and Access Information form
  • On the Corresponding Author page, as a Corresponding Author, you should select affiliation. This is how Elsevier links you to the agreement.
  • On the Publishing Options page, you as an author will see the different publishing options; Open Access and Subscription. If you want to take part of the agreement and publish your article openly available without paying APC, choose Open Access. Then the library will verify if you are affiliated to Södertörn University.
  • On the Licenses page, you need to select the Creative Common license CC-BY. This is the license included in the agreement.
  • Confirm and complete the following steps.

The agreement includes unlimited Open Access publishing in all Emerald journals, including fully Open Access journals, as well as publishing on the Emerald Open Research platform. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

To take part of the agreement as a Corresponding Author, you must use your SH email address when submitting your manuscript.

The agreement covers research articles, and all articles are published with a CC-BY license.

From 2024, researchers at Södertörn University can publish Open Access articles free of charge in all Frontiers journals. The research funding organisations Vetenskapsrådet, Forte, Formas and Vinnova have decided to jointly cover the costs of publishing with publishers who only publish fully Open Access journals. Frontiers is covered by this decision.

All articles are published under the CC-BY license and the agreement covers all article types.

The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

To take part of the agreement, you as an author need to state your affiliation to Södertörn University and your SH email address. If an article has more than one Corresponding Author, it is the Submitting Corresponding Author's affiliation that determines whether the article will be published under the agreement.

From 2024, researchers at Södertörn University can publish Open Access articles free of charge in all journals from MJS Publishing. The research funding organisations Vetenskapsrådet, Forte, Formas and Vinnova have decided to jointly cover the costs of publishing with publishers who only publish fully Open Access journals. MJS Publishing is covered by this decision.

All articles are published under the CC-BY license and the agreement covers all article types.

MJS Publishing was previously called Medical Journals Sweden and includes nine journals in the field of medicine.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

When you submit your manuscript as a Corresponding Author, you state that you belong to an organisation with paid publication fees. To take advantage of the agreement, you need to state your affiliation to Södertörn University and use your SH email address. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

The agreement includes publishing with Open Access in 376 of Oxford's hybrid journals and in 111 of the publisher’s pure Open Access journals. The article types covered by the agreement are:

  • Research article
  • Review article
  • Brief report
  • Case report

The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

  • Log into Author Services using the unique link provided in the welcome email. If you don’t have an account you need to create one first.
  • On the Manuscript Licenses page, select and complete an Open Access license for your article
  • On the Publishing Charges for Your Article page, select Swedish Universities (Bibsam affiliated) from the dropdown list of institutions beneath Open Access Prepayment Account
  • Confirm and complete the subsequent steps in Author Services.

From 2024, researchers at Södertörn University can publish Open Access articles free of charge in all PLOS journals. The research funding organisations Vetenskapsrådet, Forte, Formas and Vinnova have decided to jointly cover the costs of publishing with publishers who only publish fully Open Access journals. PLOS is covered by this decision.

All articles are published under the CC-BY license and the agreement covers all article types.

PLOS publishes 15 journals with a primary focus on medicine and science. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

To take part of the agreement, you need to state your affiliation to Södertörn University and use your SH email address. When you as Corresponding Author submit your manuscript to PLOS, you use an Editorial Manager. When you reach the step Please make Payment selection, you should select My institution will fully or partially pay the fee as a member of the PLOS Institutional Account Programme. When you have made the above choices, a new drop-down menu will appear under Institutional Account Programme. Select Södertörn University there.

The agreement includes unlimited Open Access publishing in most of the journals in SAGE Premier. SAGE Premier contains approximately 970 journals. Of these, 8 titles are not included. Always search SciFree first to find out if the journal you want to publish your article in is part of an agreement or not. The agreement also includes publication in the publisher's Open Access journals SAGE Gold OA Package. The package contains around 200 titles. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2027.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

Follow these steps to publish Open Access in one of SAGE's hybrid journals:

  • Once your article has been accepted, you will receive an email with a link to the SAGE Open Access Portal (SOAP).
  • Log in or create an account in SOAP and follow the instructions.
  • Select Open Access for your article (default), you will not receive an APC invoice.
  • The article will receive a CC BY license.

The agreement includes publishing with Open Access in Springer Nature's hybrid journals, so-called Open Choice (just over 2,000 titles). It has been expanded to include the journals published under the imprints Palgrave Macmillan and Nature Academic Journals. The articles are licensed CC-BY. Article types covered are:

  • Original Papers
  • Review Papers
  • Brief Communications
  • Continuous Education

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

Once your article has been accepted, Springer will send you a link to the MyPublication form. There you will be asked to state your affiliation from a list of institutions. Select Södertörn University and use your email address for SH.

The library then verifies your affiliation and the article is published Open Access at no cost to you.

The agreement includes publishing with Open Access in Springer Nature's Open Access journals. Included imprints are as follows:

  • BioMed Central (BMC)
  • Springer Open Journals
  • Springer Nature
  • Nature Research
  • Palgrave Macmillan

During the contract period, a certain number of articles per year are included. The number of articles is not specified per organisation, but the "first come, first served" principle applies. The agreement period is until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

After your article is accepted, the Corresponding Author will receive an email with a link to Springer Nature's Eligibility Checker, a tool where you will confirm your affiliation. Enter Södertörn University and confirm.

The library then verifies your affiliation and the article is published Open Access at no cost to you.

The agreement includes publishing with Open Access in all Taylor & Francis hybrid journals and pure Open Access journals. Research and review articles are included in the agreement. Usually these are categorised as "Article", "Research Article", "Review" or "Review Article", but depending on the journal and subject area, other terms may be used.

During the contract period, a certain number of articles per year are included. The number of articles is not specified per organisation, but the "first come, first served" principle applies. How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

In addition to stating your affiliation to Södertörn University, it is important that you use your SH email address when sending a manuscript to one of Taylor & Francis hybrid journals. In this way, the publisher automatically identifies articles that qualify for publishing with Open Access within the university's agreement.

After your article has been accepted, the library will be notified and asked to verify your affiliation. Shortly afterwards, you will receive an email from Taylor & Francis asking you to choose a CC license for your article. Once you have done this, the article will be published Open Access.

The agreement includes publishing with Open Access in all Wiley's hybrid journals (approximately 1,330 titles) and Wiley’s and Hindawi’s pure Open Access journals (approximately 570 titles). The agreement includes a limited number of articles. Article types included in the agreement are within the main types of research article ("Original article", "Primary research article") and review article ("Review article"). Before an article is submitted for Open Access publication under the agreement, it is mapped against the two main types and only articles identified as research or review articles are allowed through. The agreement is valid until 31 December 2024.

How do you as a researcher take part in the agreement?

When publishing in a Wiley journal with Open Access, the Corresponding Author can choose Södertörn University as the paying institution already at the time of submission. When you publish in a hybrid journal, you will be asked to confirm your affiliation to Södertörn University and will be asked to select the "OnlineOpen" option once the article has been accepted.

The library then verifies your affiliation and the article is published Open Access at no cost to you.
