International exchange

As a doctoral student, you have opportunities to travel on an international exchange or to study abroad. The page provides information on international exchanges and opportunities for studying abroad.

Foreign exchanges

Doctoral students can apply for foreign exchanges as part of the Erasmus+ programme, for example. One option is a 1-2-week exchange, e.g. a visit to an organisation that is relevant to your thesis, or courses in academic writing and presentation techniques for doctoral students via the Atlantic organisation External link, opens in new window. in the Republic of Ireland: Exchanges can be funded by applying for a Erasmus+ staff exchange. You can find more information about Erasmus+ at the link Internationalisation below.

Erasmus programme

Doctoral students can also study at least three months abroad on the Erasmus programme via an agreement between Södertörn University and the other higher education institution. One criterion is that the doctoral student must be able to transfer the credits from the exchange period as part of their doctoral studies and the supervisor must therefore give their approval. The funding provided covers all or parts of the travel and accommodation costs. Erasmus+ does not provide compensation for salaries, so the head of department and principal supervisor must approve the exchange being conducted during paid working hours.

Report your stay abroad

Remember that you must report the stays abroad you have completed during your programme to the doctoral programme administrator before your defence, for example at the meeting about your public defence. Every year, the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) and Statistics Sweden (SCB) collect data about the international mobility of doctoral students who graduate, and the university is obliged to supply this information.
