European Universities alliance KreativEU

Södertörn University, along with ten other European universities, is part of the KreativEU - Knowledge & Creativity European University. This page provides information about the alliance and the opportunities it offers for employees at Södertörn University.

KreativEU External link, opens in new window. is a European universities alliance that builds upon a long-term institutional and strategic cooperation in the multidisciplinary area of cultural heritage. For Södertörn University, KreativEU provides opportunities that include more exchanges for students and staff, more international collaborations, developing its activities, and increased international visibility and attraction power. Partner universities are located in Portugal, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Czechia, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands.

The cultural heritage field offers various opportunities for collaboration, for example in:

  • Memory studies, uses of history, and the role of cultural heritage in identity formation processes.
  • The relationship between society, individuals, and the environment, including issues related to the use of cultural landscapes and connections to biodiversity and sustainable development.
  • The significance of culture and cultural heritage for entrepreneurship, for example in tourism, game development, or other business innovation.
  • Accessibility of cultural heritage, such as through digitization and the use of AI.
  • Protection of cultural heritage, including techniques and collaborations for preservation and restoration.
  • Conflicts related to cultural heritage, such as questions of rights or issues within international relations.

Call for Funding for Collaborations in Education and Research
A call for funding for collaborations within KreativEU is now open and available in both Swedish and English. The call is divided into two parts: one focusing on course development (WP2 Course Development) and the other on organizing network conferences and Walking Seminars (WP3 Activities). The call and application forms for each part can be found on the Swedish web Opens in new window. for KreativEU. The deadline for applications is February 27, 2026.

Activities for staff and upcoming events
Employees can participate in a variety of activities and exchanges. On the Swedish web Opens in new window.for KreativEU you will find a calendar, "Aktiviteter för högskolans medarbetare" with information about upcoming activities within KreativEU. When you participate in a KreativEU conference, your travel and accommodation, as well as any potential conference fees, are paid for by KreativEU funds. You can also apply for Erasmus+ funding to visit a KreativEU partner university in order to establish contacts and develop a collaboration or participate in a teacher/staff exchange programme at a KreativEU university (or at one of the university’s other partner universities). If you want to participate in a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), co-funding for travel and per diem is available through Erasmus+ mobility grants. Apply for funding by emailing international@sh.se.

A Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) is an exchange that lasts 5-30 days and is funded by Erasmus+. These are co-organised by at least three universities and combine physical and virtual mobility. BIPs are available to staff and students.

Funding and objectives

The KreativEU alliance has been granted four years of funding from the EU (2025-2028) through the European University Initiative Erasmus+ programme. European Universities are a flagship initiative of the EU’s European Strategy for Universities. The aim is to increase cooperation between European higher education institutions and enhance the quality and attractiveness of European universities.

The alliance’s objectives include:

  • developing joint courses and programmes, physical as well as virtual, in the multidisciplinary area of cultural heritage. These will be high quality, competitive, innovative and attractive,
  • more opportunities for students to participate in international exchanges and gain international experience,
  • increased opportunities for (interdisciplinary) cooperation for researchers and teaching staff,
  • increased opportunities for staff to undertake experience exchanges and skills development, for example by visiting and being visited by partner universities, participating in in staff weeks or blended intensive programmes,
  • promote artistic and cultural diversity and connect education, research, innovation and services with the surrounding community.

Organisation, work packages and the university’s representatives

KreativEU’s organisation and operations plan is divided into eight work packages (WP) that cover different areas. Each one has representatives from all the partner universities. The work packages and the university’s representatives are listed below.

  • WP1 Government and Management

    Managing Board: Andreas Åkerlund, professor of history at the School of Historical and Contemporary Studies and academic leader for KreativEU at Södertörn University.
