Promotion, professional development and service abroad

Read about how to apply for promotion and merit, as well as what applies when serving abroad.

Promotion

If you are a lecturer with a permanent position (employed until further notice) you can apply for promotion to senior lecturer; if you are a senior lecturer with a permanent position you can apply for promotion to professor.

The general rule for promotion is that the subject area must be the same as for your current position. Promotion does not automatically entail changed terms and conditions of employment.

Information about promotion is provided in Chapter 4 of the Appointments Procedure and in Chapter 7 of the Instructions for the Appointments Procedure, see the below documents.

You are welcome to contact befordran@sh.se for information on how to apply, or if you have other questions.

Professional development

The university has two qualification levels for teachers’ professional development: recognised university teacher and distinguished university teacher. The Faculty Board determines the requirements and criteria for each level.

To apply for an associate professorship (docent), you must have a doctoral degree and be able to demonstrate sufficient scientific and teaching expertise.

Regler för pedagogisk meritering (rules for educational qualifications) provides information about the process. This information is also available on Pedagogisk meritering External link. (Swedish only).

The documents below describe what applies when applying for an associate professorship (docent).

You're welcome to contact befordran@sh.se if you have any questions.

  • have had a medical examination
  • have taken the necessary/appropriate vaccinations
  • have obtained the necessary residence and work permits.

Check with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) that you are covered by Swedish social insurance, and obtain a certificate of this.
