Insurance

State employment means that you are covered by specific insurance policies

If you injure yourself during working hours, or on the way to or from work, you may be entitled to compensation from Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency).

State employees also have supplementary compensation through an agreement on compensation for personal injury, the “Avtal om ersättning vid personskada” or PSA, via AFA Försäkring. This may apply to loss of income, damages, medical costs, invalidity or death.

The Swedish state’s business travel insurance is valid for employees, contractors and doctoral students during business trips (domestic and foreign). Coverage includes accidents, theft, luggage, legal expenses and assault. For foreign travel, the insurance covers emergency medical and dental care, and repatriation.

Your HR generalist (or equivalent) can issue a certificate of coverage for business travel insurance.

This policy cannot be used for private holiday travel.

Visitors who participate in university activities but who are not in university employment or are a student are covered by a group insurance policy for personal injury insurance: “Särskilt personskadeskydd”.

This covers people who are permanent residents of Sweden and who have a Swedish personal ID number. It provides coverage equivalent to employees’ occupational injury insurance.

Södertörn University has taken out group insurance that applies to foreign researchers, lecturers and participants in courses, conferences or seminars. Stipend holders, external reviewers and other foreign guests, such as doctoral students participating in university activities, are also covered by this insurance policy. If a foreign visitor has brought their partner or children with them, they are also covered.

The URA insurance policy is for staff who are stationed abroad – URA stands for “overseas contracts and guidelines for employment conditions for service abroad”. It includes cover for personal injury and travel insurance. The policy is taken out with Kammarkollegiet by your local HR generalists.

All state employees are covered by the state’s occupational group life insurance, which pays a lump sum to the employee’s next-of-kin in the event of their death.

More information about the insurance and survivor’s pensions is available at SPV (Statens tjänstepensionsverk – the government agency for occupational pensions).
