Illness and occupational injury – occupational health services

If you are sick, you must inform your line manager and register it in Primula on the first sick day.

If it is a long illness, you must provide a medical certificate from day 8 onwards.

When you get ill

Your first sick day is counted as a qualifying period, and is a 100% pay deduction. On the following days you receive 80% of your pay as sick pay.

When you are well again, you end your sick leave in Primula.

A long illness

For the first 14 days you are sick (except the retirement day), the university pays your sick pay, which is 80% of your salary.

If you are sick for more than 14 days in a row, the university is obliged to make a sick report to Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency).
When Försäkringskassan has received the sickness report, you can apply for sickness benefit from them. You also need to send a medical certificate directly to Försäkringskassan.

Medical benefits and allowances

You have certain healthcare benefits and allowances. For example, you may visit a doctor, occupational health care and give blood during paid working hours.

Occupational health

The university’s occupational health service is Avonova, which provides employees with advice and support on work-related issues, both physical and psychosocial.

You may contact Avonova to visit a psychologist or behavioural scientist twice each year. If you need to book more times, your manager must provide their approval.
You can also contact Avonova for telephone counselling without your manager’s approval. Book an appointment by calling:

Occupational injury and incidents

If you hurt yourself during working hours, or on the way to or from your workplace, you must report it yourself.

Occupational injury

An occupational injury is one caused by accidents or illnesses that have arisen at work. This could be at the workplace, travelling to or from work, during work-related travel or when you are working from home.

They could be physical injuries, ill health caused by the psychosocial environment at the workplace (e.g. conflicts or high workloads), or injuries due to threats or violence.

Incidents

An incident is an event that could have led to a personal injury. For example, you could have slipped on a staircase or almost been hit by ice falling from a roof. Psychosocial events that could have led to harm are also counted as incidents (e.g. bullying and threats).

Even if you are not injured, it is important to report these incidents so that the university can identify any risks in the work environment.

Reporting

You report an incident using a digital tool called Stella. The case is then forwarded to your manager.

Investigation

Your line manager, working with the health and safety representative, is responsible for investigating what caused the event and taking action to prevent further accidents, injuries or incidents. Södertörn University’s Health, Safety and Equality Committee is tasked with following up accidents and incidents.

Compensation

When you report your injury in Stella External link., the case is also automatically forwarded to Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. They investigate the occupational injury to clarify whether you are entitled to compensation.

State employment means that you are covered by the AFA insurance policy. You can receive compensation from AFA for additional costs incurred due to injury or illness, provided that the costs are necessary and reasonable, and they have not been reimbursed by anyone else. You must be able to provide original receipts as proof of your costs and expenses.

You apply for compensation from AFA via Stella.

If you have questions, contact your manager or HR generalist.
